Research interests

Modern transnational and global history, internationalism, anti-fascism, anti-racism and resistance to the extreme right and right-wing populism.

I have specialized in transnational and global history, including left internationalism, international communism, and anti-fascist movements in European and global contexts.

The Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation has granted me a 12 month research grant to co-write a monograph with Nigel Copsey (Teesside): Anti-Fascism: A Global History (Routledge). The book will offer a global analysis of key anti-fascist moments from the 1920s to the present day.

I have 2020-2022 participated in the research project "Finland-Swedish Antifascism" (Den finlandssvenska antifascismen) that analyses the history of anti-fascism in Finland from the 1920s to the 1940s. The project investigates how anti-fascism has functioned as a cohesive and dividing force in ethnic minorities. The project is headed by Docent Anders Ahlbäck and it was awarded 400.000 € by the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS) in November 2017. Within the project I have worked on liberal and bourgeois anti-fascism in Finland. A major international outcome of the project is the anthology: Anti-fascism and Ethnic Minorities that includes over a dozen case studies on the conflictual relation between anti-fascist and ethnic identities in Central and Eastern Europe.

Recent co-edited volumes/special issues include:

Special Issue of South African Historical Journal: Anti-Fascism in Southern Africa, vol. 74 (1) 2022.

Anti-Fascism in a Global Perspective: Transnational Networks, Exile Communities, and Radical Internationalism (Routledge, 2021)

Anti-Fascism in the Nordic Countries: New Perspectives, Comparisons and Transnational Connections (Routledge, 2019)

New CALL FOR ARTICLES on "Imagining the 20th Century Resistance Fighter: Intersectional perspectives on anti-fascist movements and commemorations” for a special issue of Twentieth Century Communism co-edited with Elke Wesjees (<https://networks.h-net.org/node/11082568/pdf>)

I am editorial board member of the international journal Twentieth Century Communism and the journal's book reviews editor.

I have peer reviewed original research articles for the journals Global Networks (Wiley), Contemporary European History (Cambridge UP), Scandinavian Journal of History (Routledge); and Fascism: Journal of Comparative Fascist Studies (Brill). Moroever, I have reviewed books in European History Quarterly, History: The Journal of the Historical Association, American Historical Review, Twentieth Century Communism, Historisk Tidskrift för Finland, Finsk Tidskrift, International Newsletter of Communist Studies, and H-Net (H-Socialisms).
