Research interests

Dr. Tesfaye's professional interest is research & teaching in the areas of Circular Economy in the Metal & Energy Industries that would promote a sustainable production in environmentally friendly manner.


Dr. Tesfaye is a Senior Researcher with the title of Docent in metallurgical thermodynamics in the Johan Gadolin Process Chemistry Centre at Åbo Akademi University. He received his M.Sc. degree in materials processing technology and Ph.D. degree in metallurgy from Aalto University, Finland. His research activities are focused mainly on the thermodynamic investigation of inorganic materials as well as rigorous theoretical and experimental investigations for promoting improved valuable metals and renewable energy production. Dr. Tesfaye was also appointed as a Visiting Research Scientist in Seoul National University, South Korea, for 6 months (2018).

Dr. Tesfaye edited several scientific research books, and serves as a Subject Editor of a high-impact journal, JOM (Springer Nature). He is a regular contributor and active member of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), and is a winner of the 2018 TMS Young Leader Award. His personal research achievements include significant improvement of experimental research applying the solid-state EMF technique for thermodynamic studies, as well as remarkable contribution for promoting the move towards the circular economy. In his research areas, Dr. Tesfaye has published over 45 peer-reviewed publications.
