Significance of Compassion in War and Pain

Activity: Talk or presentationConference presentation

Description

Medieval Christians were invited to meditate the suffering of Christ and all who had loved him/whom he had loved. The goal of the meditation was to feel compassion with the Biblical figures. The deep understanding and experiencing of compassion would then help the person live their life as a better Christian. We investigate how compassion was present in a text that had warfare in its center, in medieval art, and in the devout texts, especially in Meditationes vitae Christi. We suggest that experiencing compassion in practice helped to cope with difficult crisis and feelings of loss.
