Abstract

In
a traditional learning setting the teacher often transmits the mathematics
curriculum according to what is said in a textbook and in a strict and rather
learner-passive manner. During the last decades research has pointed out
controversies in this approach to teaching and learning mathematics. In the
present article the author discusses some of these controversies and introduces
a different approach to teaching and learning mathematics, the active learning
approach. The active learning approach was used in a workshop at the ICEL2000
called "Active learning of mathematics". The structure of this
workshop is presented in the article. Key
