Abstract

The forest industry strives towards renewal as new innovations prevail also in areas outside their
comfort zone. As a flagship approach, novel biomass fractionation processes enable a future use of
not only cellulose but also hemicelluloses in high-value applications within the biomedical area.
This paper describes our efforts to promote the use of hemicelluloses together with nanocellulose in
hydrogels and aerogels for wound healing, tissue engineering, and controlled drug release.
