In this work a series of model inks with detailed knowledge of the components has been prepared in order to Study the influence of the ink formulation oil the degree of observed print rub. The ink-coating interactions of the model inks applied to two matte coatings (fast and slow ink setting) are probed with ISIT (ink Surface Interaction Tester), and print rub is investigated using, independently, a modified ISIT and the Prufbau Quartant. Additionally, print quality, gloss and ink density are evaluated. The results imply that the higher the total ink solids content the greater the Occurrence of print rub. Wax addition, especially PTFE wax, aids in creating an ink formulation which is more resilient against print rub. A high amount of linseed oil in an ink applied on slow setting paper coating has a negative influence Oil print rub. A step behavior observed during tack decay in ISIT Curves of the model inks is linked to oil-latex interactions.
