Abstract

In this article, the importance of family background on economic status for adult men and women is clarified. The empirical estimates are based on a sample from the Finnish population censuses 1970-1995. The analyses show that the earnings correlation between adult children and their parents is relatively low in Finland. The earnings correlations have been constant for those who were born in the 1950s and 1960s. By decomposing the correlation, mechanisms behind the correlation can be found. The welfare state, and the educational system in 58 particular, are of importance for the economic status of children.
