Biography

Dr. Tesfaye is a Senior Researcher and Docent in metallurgical thermodynamics in the Johan Gadolin Process Chemistry Centre at Åbo Akademi University. He received his Master’s degree in materials processing technology in 2009 from Helsinki University of Technology and PhD degree in metallurgy in 2014 from Aalto University, Finland. After a Postdoc position in the Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry at Åbo Akademi University, from January 2015 to August 2017, he attracted a competitive Academy of Finland research project under the topic "Thermodynamics in the renewable energy and metals production processes". Since September 2017, he was assigned as a Principal Investigator and Project Manager. His research activities are focused mainly on the thermodynamic investigation of inorganic materials as well as rigorous theoretical and experimental examination for promoting improved circular economy in the metal and energy industries. Dr. Tesfaye was also appointed as a Visiting Research Scientist in Seoul National University, South Korea, for 6 months between March and August 2018.

Dr. Tesfaye is a regular contributor and active member of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), and is the 2018 TMS Young Leader Award winner. He serves technical committees including the Recycling and Environmental Technologies, Energy, and Young Professional Development committees of TMS. He edited many scientific research books and special issues of high-impact factor journals. His personal achievements include significant improvement of experimental research applying the solid-state EMF technique for thermodynamic studies, as well as remarkable contribution for promoting the move towards the circular economy. In his research areas, Dr. Tesfaye has published over 40 peer-reviewed publications.


Professional interests

Dr. Tesfaye's professional interest is in research and teaching in the scope of metallurgical engineering and circular economy that would promote a sustainable production of technology metals.
